On Thursday June 2, 2022 my thyroid results came back - first time in 21 years all results came in within the normal range.
In 2017, I watched Dr Izabella Wentz's documentary "The Thyroid Secret" and it blew my mind, by using the guidelines she suggested and with my knowledge on food and nutrition, I have been able to reduce my thyroid levels and live a life with more energy, focus, happiness and wish to share my knowledge with others.
At the start of 2017, I was 115kg and so tired, lethargic, and felt like such a failure. I had tried everything to get my hypothyroidism under control, but nothing seemed to work. I came across Dr Izabella Wentz's documentry "The Thyroid Secret" and it changed my life. A month earlier I had decided to become vegan, and then watching her documentary she suggested that all people who suffer with thyroid issues should be gluten free, dairy free, soy free. This was the first time I had heard this, and because I had just gone vegan I was eating gluten and soy.
So I gave up gluten and soy and suddenly I had energy. I couldn't believe it. For the past 15 years, I had been sleeping 10 hours at night and 1.5 hours each day, my eyes would burn by 3pm if I had forgotten my medication, it was really hard to lose weight, and I felt ugly, fat, and a complete failure. Why did the other mums at school not have these issues? All anyone ever said to me was eat less. Well I did that, using guidelines from varies places - mostly 1 egg on 1 piece of toast (gluten), salad for lunch with tofu (soy), salad and vegetables for dinner with a small amount of pasta (gluten). No wonder it never worked.
March 2017 I joined the 8 week bootcamp of Bright Line Eating, which makes you weigh your food at each meal, only 3 meals a day, no snacking in between, and no flour or sugar, and only certain types of food at each meal. I went to a party 4 days after starting this diet and I received so many compliments about how good I was looking. As you can imagine I hadn't lost weight, but my eyes were suddenly clear, I wasn't bloated, I had energy, I had a new lease on life, I was interested in other people's opinions, what they had been doing, I felt like I belonged in society again. Within 1 month I was losing weight and feeling great. Around week 4 I got this strange headache at the back of my head and my intuition was telling me my medication was too high, so I cut one of my pills in half, and headache went away. A week later, another headache, so I cut out the half a tablet and headache went away. Same thing happened over the next few weeks with the other tablet, my dosage was so high I needed to take 2 tablets.
Unfortunately 5 months later, after losing 30kg, my bones were cold and I couldn't work out why, so I tried to eat a bit of meat, no success, I added a bit of sugar, nothing, flour, nothing, the only thing I had managed to do was lose the momentum of the rigidness of the diet. I enrolled in a Diploma of Whole Food Plant Based Eating at Nature Care College in Sydney, so I could learn how to be a healthy vegan. This gave me my answer to my cold bones (low calcium), and I continued on to do the Professional Certificate of Nutrition and Food Coaching, so I could help others learn how to improve their thyroid, bring more fruit and vegetables into their diets, as well as what you need to know if you are going to live a vegan lifestyle.
I am a student of life and always keep wanting to learn. My interests are varied but somehow still have a theme running through them. Currently I am studying to a shamanic healer, I am incorporating generational healing / clearing of old emotions, and using crystal grids.
I am a nutrition and food coach, that helps people one on one with creating a healthy way of eating. I treat each client as an individual, and do not impose any particular "diet" upon them. If a person has a style of eating then creating healthy options from what they normally eat, will enable them to feel like they can do this, rather than this is too hard.
I use EFT (tapping), as a tool for people to take control of their emotions and be able to shift their vibration at the time they need it. I also focus on nutrient density and allow the client to understand their choices, and how to make better choices.
Having completed a counseling degree back in 2008, and studying coaching, I also use 'active listening' to really hear what the client is trying to say. In 2021, our lives can feel so overwhelming, there is so much fear around, and the perception seems to be that women especially need to have everything under control. There is no perfect size or shape, and each person has different desires, wants and needs. Allowing the client to understand what they want from life, and how they can achieve this on the path of least resistance is where I come in. At 56 my aim is not to be thin, but to be healthy, I still want to be here if I am fortunate to have grandchildren.
My joy is helping people understand that if cooking is not your passion, then don't try and create 'masterchef' meals. If you don't like running, find exercise where you don't use running, personally I love to walk and play tennis, and to make myself laugh I try and ride a skateboard.
My passion is to educate people that they can use their diet to heal their thyroid issues with diet. In our society we are surrounded by foods made by gluten and dairy or soy for vegetarians/vegans. Our society creates modified foods to be able to create abundance of food, but unfortunately our bodies do not recognise when wheat has been pulled apart and put back together, the nutrients in our soils have been depleted, and the combination of flour, sugar, oil and salt has created an addiction within our psyche that makes people it is impossible to give these things up.
There is a change happening in our society but the mainstream of women in their late 20's and early 30's are being diagnosed with thyroid issues, and are being put on medication to fall pregnant, or being diagnosed with hashimoto's or hypothyroidism after giving birth. Iodine is a nutrient that is needed in our bodies for our thyroids to work properly, and we deleted the iodine in our soil back in the 50's, so now the main area to obtain it is through seaweed/kelp, jerusalem artichokes, potato, pineapple, celery, pears, and romaine lettuce. However, iodine is needed in only a specific amount so too much or too little can create an issue.
Our bodies are very creative and if they can't find iodine they will find something similar and try to use it. In "The Thyroid Encyclopaedia" by Kylie Wolfig she states that too much chloride can destroy chlorine, too much fluoride can destroy fluorine, and too much bromide can destroy bromine. Some examples of where we would find these are: chloride is in tap water, pool water, cleaning products, Splenda. Too much fluoride can be found by having toothpaste, mouth wash, dental treatments, rice and black tea. Bromide is found in bakery products. Looking at these we can see that most people would be consuming at least one or more each day.
As a speaker and mentor, I will bring energy and connection to your next event. Contact me, and we can design a presentation that fits the needs that you have today.

Have you been struggling with energy, weight, depression, and you know most of this is because of your thyroid?
That was how I felt 4 years ago and for the 15 years before that. Over the past 4 years I have been reading whatever I can that would help me get off my medication and get my thyroid levels back to normal. My TSH has not been under 10 since 2002 but just a month ago it was 5.4. A normal range is under 4, so I will keep going and learning what is affecting it.
While I am doing this I want to help others do the same. So I am creating a 4 week course that will guide you and help you create a diet that is thyroid friendly.
In the meantime join my facebook page - foodandthyroid and each Sunday night I will give tips on what foods can affect our thyroid, and other bits and pieces.
For more information on fees and availability, send me a message. Tell me about your event, and I will get back to you soon with more information.
Here is a short introduction on how I discovered I had a thyroid issue and what you can do to help yourself
Kylie Wolfig has put together the most comprehensive list and guide on how to help heal your thyroid. It is my go to book to find out anything about my thyroid.
David Brownstein M.D, has written this great book "Overcoming Thyroid Disorders" in such a way that everyone can understand. It would be my recommendation that this is where you start on your own journey of discovering about your thyroid.
If you are aware of the Medical Medium Anthony William, you will understand how he is able to take a lot of information and write it in simple easy to understand information. Fantastic book and great recipes.
Dr Alan Christianson M.D has some great advice and some great recipes for starting your journey on healing your thyroid through food. He has written this book with the knowledge that we just need daily guidance on exactly what to do.
Dr Neal D Barnard M.D has written this great book on the new science of food, hormones and health. He only has a very small section on thyroid, but he believes that iodine plays a major part in why so many people are having thyroid issues.
